The following is the twelfth installment of my serial novel, ALO & WYOME. If you missed chapter eleven, you can read it here, or if you’re just starting out, you can read the first installment of ALO & WYOME here.

ALO AND WYOME LEFT THE HOLLOW OF WIDOWS and continued along the path. The forest floor had brightened with new life. Dense patches of tall, aromatic ferns grew over the ground beyond the path. Yellow lilies and blue-eyed grasses grew where the ferns relented. Small white and red flowers budded on trees destined to bear fruit in the fall. The creek that ran alongside the path swelled to the size of a small river with snow melt. Birds of all sizes and colors flitted in the air overhead, and the squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals dashed about from tree to tree.

Wherever they made camp, Dolly and the other two dogs would spend hours chasing after hares or a stray chipmunk in the evenings. Their hunts were often unsuccessful, but Alo and Wyome enjoyed watching the animals’ antics.

They stopped early one day. It was one of the warmest days they had encountered, and they spotted a massive willow tree that looked excellent to camp beneath. Alo and Wyome found a place to lie under the tree’s drooping canopy to escape from the sun, and Dolly lounged nearby. The other two dogs stalked after a vole. They could be heard, but neither Alo nor Wyome could see them.
